The common Fig is an important plant in human history, and has been in cultivation for 5,000 years! It is native to the Middle East and western Asia, and it can grow from 10 to 30 feet high and wide. Smooth gray bark hides beneath large, luscious leaves that have 3 to 5 deeply cut lobes. Produces fruit popular amongst humans and animals alike!
These plants will grow in dry and sunny areas, but will look fuller and healthier with moderate water. They prefer deep, fresh, well-drained soil, but thanks to their aggressive root systems, they will also grow in rocky areas from sea level to 5,000 feet! Aside from the highly beneficial crop of fruit that they produce, common figs are great specimen plants!
