Often found in avalanche chutes, this is perhaps the prettiest of the small native alders. It is usually ten to twenty feet tall, but can grow a bit higher under some conditions and often forms thickets. It has a conical habit, and its shiny green leaves are borne on red petioles. Its 5 inch long catkins are abundant in late winter. Sitka Alder thrive in moderately fertile, moist but well-drained to wet soil, in full sun or partial sun. Use the Sitka Alder for its beauty, erosion control, bird habitat and stream enhancement.
