A dominant species in British Columbia and Alaska, the Western Red Cedars range extends along the coast into northern California. This is the wood from which the Northwest Coastal Indians carved their totem poles, made their lodges. It is a large conifer, can grow to 150ft in height with a 20ft diameter in old growth forests. In the garden, it seldom reaches 70ft even in much time. Slender drooping branchlets, closely set with dark green scale-like leaves form flat, lacy sprays. Grow the Western Red in deep, moist, well-drained soil. In our hot interior valleys, they do better with partial shade, especially when young.
