These graceful deciduous trees grow to about 20-30ft in height, nearly the same in width. Japanese Snowbell, has simple, oval leaves, 1 - 3 1/2inches long and half as wide, soft, rich green, extending from the top of the curving, horizontal branches. After the leaves are developed, delicate, clear white bells with soft yellow centers hang on short stems below the branches, like clouds of butterflies (Tripp). The attractive foliage above the softly fragrant blossoms gives a tiered effect. Styrax should be planted in moist, slightly acid, well-drained soil, to which peat or other organic material has been added. They need regular moisture and protection from winter wind. Partial shade is better placement in our hot valleys.
