As handsome as any cultivar, this shrubby, 3-6ft native is lovely in the garden and priceless for riparian planting. It tolerates being flooded for long periods of time, has a strong root system for erosion control. It has many stems, each one tipped with purple-pink flowers in dense terminal panicles, to 8in, that appear hairy because of the long red stamens. Leaves are oval, dark green, to 4 inch. Plant this where it can receive ample water and full sun or light shade.
Zones: 3 to 7
