Prickly Currant is a native shrub, found across much of the northern US In sunlit areas this currant grows erect, but in shade the branches may trail on the ground. Leaves are lobed, smooth and mostly hairless. Greenish-purple to reddish racemes of flowers bloom from May to June, with purple-black lightly-haired fruit ripening in August There are clustered spines on the stems. Grows to 3-4ft. and prefers cool, moist areas. It is a good wildlife food.
