Swamp White Oak is native to moist soils, so is useful in lawns or other areas receiving regular water, but it also shows remarkable drought resistance. It prefers clay soils or loam and tolerates sun, shade, and wind, a most obliging tree! It resembles our native oaks in form and leaf, but is much faster growing once established. Shiny leaves are dark green on top, white and suede-soft beneath. They turn rich deep yellow to gold to red and burgundy in the fall. It has a strong root system, transplants well and is long lived. It makes a good shade tree in a yard, is perfect for a mixed woodland. Try it if your site is too wet for Oregon White Oak, or if you want a tree that doesn't take a long time to look like a tree.
