The most common native pine in Southern Oregon, the Ponderosa is a beautiful landscape choice where there is room for its great height. its open conical form in youth becomes a tall spire with age. Best for large areas, it loves the hot, dry slopes of its native range. Use it for a windbreak, mixed in a woodland, and be sure it will be used by wildlife. Many birds eat its seed or comb its needles and bark for insects. In this area we look for Crossbills, Grosbeaks, Jays, Woodpeckers, Nuthatches, Siskins, Kinglets, Chickadees and Finches. Branches provide nesting sites, as do cavities in older trees.
