While there are many others of the same name, this is the Bird's Nest Spruce most people mean. It is a dense shrub with no central trunk, wider than it is high. Branches, in tight horizontal layers, form a nest-shaped depression at the top. Growing at about 1½ in. per year, it may become 5-6ft by 8-10ft. Use this favorite at an entry, in the alpine garden, or as a dark anchor in a border. Moist, well-drained soil and sun or partial shade keep it happy.
Zones: 3 to 8
