Western Crab is a multi-stemmed native, a large shrub or small tree, growing to about ten feet. Oval leaves are toothed and often slightly lobed. Apple-blossom flowers are clustered at the ends of twigs. Small red or yellow fruits follow. This is a plant of wetlands- stream banks, damp woods, even swamps and bogs. It also grows in more open, drier canyons and foothills. While its ornamental value does not match that of some domestic cultivars, this is a great plant. Use it in a woodland, along a waterway, or as part of a hedgerow.
