Wonderful, tall, 5 - 15 feet, native shrub, Ocean Spray is found at many elevations, in settings from dry woodlands, roadsides and cut-over areas, to moist streamsides. Attractive 3" leaves are darker above, hairy and light beneath. From late May into July, its arching branches are covered with large, pendent, plume-like clusters of creamy-white flowers that age to a warm tan and persist. Plant this in your open woodland, shrub border, or as specimens. It is a perfect restoration species because of its tenacity. A good habitat species, its fine branch structure provides cover for songbirds, and insects relished by chickadees and other insect-eaters. Several butterfly species eat the foliage. Supply fertile, well-drained, humus-rich soil and some water for best growth.
