Hardy and adaptable, this is a large tree with bold character. It has handsome, distinctive bark and large, compound leaves, to thirty-six by twenty-four inches. Even though the leaves are so large, they are delicate in appearance because of their many leaflets. The blue-toned leaves have pink and purple colors in spring, turn yellow in autumn. Use this in a large setting, nice where it can be seen against the sky.
Boldly architectural structure and dark gray bark, with almost white twigs, make this grand tree as impressive in winter as it is the rest of the year. Rather slow growing to 90 x 45 feet, it has an oval crown. Leaves, pink-tinged, then blue-green, turning warm yellow in the fall, are large, compound, to 3 feet by 2 feet. Fragrant panicles of creamy white flowers are followed on female trees by pods of hard-shelled seeds. These seeds, though toxic unless roasted, were used to make a coffee-like beverage. Rarely troubled by pest or disease, it prefers full sun, moist, deep, rich soil, but is widely adapted.
