The Bigtooth Sugar Maple, or Canyon Maple, is native east of the Cascades. Like its eastern Sugar Maple relative, it has sweet sap and brilliant scarlet, orange or yellow fall color. Eventual height is about 30 feet, making it suitable for ornamental use. The lobed, shiny dark-green leaves are pale and hairy beneath, 2-3in. long and wide. It grows in the moist soils of canyons and plateaus in mountains from Idaho to Texas. Its wood is strong and hard.
