This broad-topped native, a dense shade tree, needs room for its 30-60 feet height and spread. Huge leaves, six to twelve inches across, are bright green in spring, and look like solidified sunshine in autumn. Prominent yellow flower clusters add springtime interest. (A small child once asked me if she could come see my banana tree. It took a while to realize she was mis-interpreting the pendant flower clusters.) Naturally a riparian plant, it is adaptable and creates its own cool site. Be sure it has ample moisture. The Big-leaf Maple goes well with Alders, Ninebark, and Douglas Spirea along a waterway
